    Title: Strengthening Higher Education Philanthropy in Pacific Asia: Lessons Learned From an Institution.

    Abstract: Many countries have come to realize that fundraising is a major factor for the effectiveness of higher education. However, for many institutions, fundraising is a new and difficult practice. In many countries, public education has long been considered to be part of the social safety net, but this safety net is no longer sufficient for today’s higher education needs. The recent worldwide economic recession, the increasing cost of operating institutions of higher education, decreasing enrollments and government budget cuts have prompted administrators to act aggressively. This study selected a public institution in Pacific Asia to assess its fundraising practice, strategy and accountability. According to local standards, this university is one of the few insti tutions to successfully initiate a fundraising practice. We found that establishing an appropriately staffed professional fundraising office is an important first step. Preferably, these officers should be hired from the non-academic and government sectors. Workshops and job training should be offered frequently. The university must set a clear fundraising goal, and the fundraisers must possess strong marketing and communication skills, understand their products and academic needs and be able construct soci al networks. Several implications of the research are presented.
