Since 1978, the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) developed by P. Ekman and W. Friesen has been irreplaceable in the facial animation research community, where use of FACS as a human-machine interface in facial animation systems was an important milestone. Although a few papers have adopted approaches to simulate FACS by means of computer graphics means, a truly FACS-based facial animation system has not yet been developed. It is very difficult to implement FACS using current computer graphicstechniques along. To realize its implementation, we need to view the generation of facial expressions by rather high level abstraction of a physical state. To achieve this goal, we propose a FACS-based facial animation system that contains two majorcomponents: an object-oriented system model for construction of the face abstraction and a presentation synthesizer for synthesis of facial animation. Some illustrative examples are given to reveal the processes involved in some of the key design concepts of the proposed system.
