Abstract: The present study examined on-line social support perceived by Facebook (FB) users and its effect on stress coping. A sample of 518 college students participated in a survey, in which they responded to items requiring about their use of FB, perceived social support from FB friends, resilience, and feeling of stress. This study had four important findings: First, the participants perceived having received significantly more informational and appraisal aspects of support than emotional support. Second, the participants who frequently used FB’s embedded services or Apps (i.e., News Feed, Photos, Events, Groups, and Chat) reported receiving significantly greater levels of social support than those who occasionally or seldom used these Apps. Third, FB users’ perceived social support and resilience were positively correlated with each other, and were both negatively correlated with feeling of stress. Finally, FB social support accounted significantly for the variability of stress, after taking into account of the effect of resilience. The characteristics of on-line social support were discussed, as well as suggestions for future research.
